What the Committee Does

The Governmental Relations Committee works to advocate for student interests in the local, state, and federal governments as well as encourage participation in governmental elections. Members of this committee register students to vote in Johnson County, organize events such as debate watch parties, and partner with Hawkeye Caucus to meet with state legislators in Des Moines.

Why It Matters

This committee ensures that student perspectives are included in legislative discussions. Governmental decisions—such as those related to higher education funding, campus safety, and public policy—have a direct impact on students' experiences. By maintaining communication with policymakers, monitoring legislation, and providing resources like this guide, the committee supports student engagement and encourages informed participation in civic processes.

USG Caucus Day

Legislative Advocacy Trips

Coordinating visits to the Iowa State Capitol where students meet directly with legislators to discuss higher education funding, student housing, and campus safety.

Lease Gap and Renters Guide

The Lease Gap/Renters Guide initiatives are two of the most prominent and impactful that the City Liaisons tackle. Each year we reach hundreds of members of the student body and help them navigate the difficult world of renting along with our partners at Student Legal Services and The Graduate Hotel. Both of these initiatives also continue to expand and improve year after year to ensure that they can grow and stay relevant to the student body's needs.

Partnership Building

Strengthening relationships between the University of Iowa, the Iowa Board of Regents, and lawmakers to ensure student needs are part of important policy discussions.
