USG, short for Undergraduate Student Government, is the University of Iowa’s campus-wide elected body of undergraduate student representatives. As part of the university’s shared governance model, USG serves as the voice of students—drafting legislation, advocating on student issues, and allocating funding to student organizations.
Each fall, the Internal Affairs Committee opens Senate Applications for students interested in joining USG as senators. Unlike the spring election process, this route involves no campaigning—just an application and interview. Many students find it to be a more approachable entry point into student government.
Charlie Brink
"As a student, I mostly interact with people who share my interests and values—but USG connected me with a wider range of peers and mentors, helping me grow and broaden my perspective. It’s also made me more attuned to the concerns of students, faculty, and staff through shared governance. Most importantly, I’ve met my best friends and made my favorite college memories here. Even if you don’t picture yourself in student government, there’s so much to gain from this organization."
Noah Davidson
"I joined USG because I wanted to help make a tangible difference on campus and ensure student voices are heard in the decisions that affect us most. Being part of the Senate has given me the opportunity to work with passionate peers and strong leaders, advocate for change, and grow both personally and professionally. USG has brought me my best friends for life, and being a part of such an amazing organization has been one of the most rewarding parts of my college experience so far!"
Ava Labine
"Student Government has provided me with the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally, while building meaningful connections. My role has given me the unique chance to make significant improvements on our campus, which is an experience that has been both exciting and deeply rewarding."
Frequently Asked Questions
Who should apply?
USG welcomes applicants from all academic backgrounds and levels of experience. You do not need prior involvement in student government to apply—what matters most is a genuine interest in improving the student experience at the University of Iowa. We value diverse perspectives and are especially eager to hear from students with innovative ideas and a desire to make meaningful change on campus.
What is expected of me as a USG Senator?
As a USG Senator, you’ll attend weekly Senate meetings every Tuesday night and serve on two committees. You’ll also hold a weekly office hour in the USG office to engage with fellow students and other USG members. In addition to these responsibilities, senators participate in our annual USG retreat and take part in a spring trip to the Iowa State Capitol to advocate for student interests. Throughout the year, many of our events—such as town halls, shared governance meetings, and alumni networking opportunities--are scheduled in place of regular USG meetings.
