University charter committees advise institutional leadership on a wide range of topics—from teaching and research to supporting and engaging our campus community. These committees are made up of faculty, students, and staff who come together to discuss and provide input on issues related to their specific focus areas.
While these committees are not a part of Undergraduate Student Government, we help share these opportunities so students can get involved and have a voice in broader university initiatives.
Who can join University Charter Committees?
Any full-time student who will be attending the university during the term in which they will serve on the committee is encouraged to apply!
How can I join a University Charter Committee? What does the appointment process entail?
For undergraduate students, the application to serve on a University Charter Committee opens in the spring semester before the year in which you will serve on the committee. For example, the application to serve on a UCC in the 2026 – 2027 term will open in the spring of 2026.
Once the application period ends, the USG Internal Chief of Staff works alongside the Internal Affairs Chair and Committee to review the applications and make appointments. Appointments are made with consideration of student preferences; however, preferences do not guarantee appointment to a particular committee. Once appointments are made, all appointees will be confirmed by the USG Senate at a formal Senate meeting.
What are the committees on which I can serve? Where can I learn more about specific committees?
Please visit this website to view the various committees and learn more about them. If you see a particular committee that interests you, we recommend that you click on the committee and then click on “Committee Charter” to read about the committee’s membership, charge, and guidelines.
Who can I contact with my questions about University Charter Committees?
Please contact the USG Internal Chief of Staff at USG-InternalCOS@uiowa.edu.
