"I'm the First"
With 23% of the 2016 first-year class at the University of Iowa being first-generation students, the UI is a leader in higher education for first-generation student accessibility. First-generation students are students for whom neither parent nor guardian has received a baccalaureate degree. Because of the importance of first-generation students to the UI community, the University of Iowa Student Government, in collaboration with the First-Generation Student Task Force sponsored by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, is excited to announce the call for presentations for the “I’m the First” First Generation Student Summit.
Goals of the Summit

Spread awareness and understanding of the first-generation student identity.

Educate the UI community—students, staff, and faculty—about the first-generation experience in a higher education institution.

Provide an opportunity for the UI community to build skills that will increase the success of first-generation students.

Showcase the UI’s commitment to first-generation students and celebrate first-generation students on campus.
Submission Process

Submit your proposal to the Call for Presentations Form by Wednesday, February 28.

Receive a decision from the First-Generation Student Task Force.

Accept the opportunity to present at the "I'm First at Iowa" First Generation Summit.

Present at the Summit on Saturday, April 7.
FAQs
When and where is the Summit?
The Summit will be held on Saturday, April 7 at the Iowa Memorial Union.
Who is the audience for my presentation?
Students, staff, and faculty who are interested in learning about first-generation students and building skills to better support first-generation students at UI. Expect to present to up to 60 people.
How long are the presentations?
Presentations should last between 40-45 minutes.
Do I have to present alone?
No, we invite presenters to collaborate with a co-presenter.
What kinds of presentations work well?
Presentations that engage the audience are ideal, so consider ways to facilitate discussion and reflection while also sharing information.
What materials do I need to provide?
Consider creating a PowerPoint presentation or providing printed handouts.
What qualifications do I need to have to present?
No qualifications are necessary. All you need to do is demonstrate that your topic is relevant to the Summit, and that you will be able to present effectively.
How much will it cost to participate and present in the Summit?
The coordinators are setting a goal to make the Summit free for both participants and presenters. Registration and lunch will be provided to all participants and presenters.
